Layla's Girl

Carla’s life seems perfect to those looking in from the outside.  She’s strong, intelligent, has a supportive man, a good job, and a promising future.  What isn’t visible is a life filled with longing and regret – longing for the mother she never knew and regret for the mother she had.

Layla’s Girl is the story of Carla Avery, a young woman estranged from her mother for seven years.  Carla lives each day with the disappointment of a dysfunctional childhood.  Her only goal in life is to reverse the effects of her past and map out a course that will dictate her future.  That is until the death of her mother forces her to reevaluate her expectations of family and the meaning of unconditional love.

While at home for her mother’s funeral, the war between her and her brother Charles heats up and the truth comes out about her favorite aunt, Kay.  To make matters worse, she and her boyfriend Odai reach a crisis point in their relationship, and the only person she can turn to is family friend and local drunk, JB.

Through it all Carla discovers that to secure a happy future she must first let go of the resentment she feels for her mother and embark on a journey to reconnect with her remaining family members.
